Masha and Veronika Babko are the most famous Russian artists of the art-form known as mixed media. They are twins who work in various mediums, most notably watercolor painting, collage, sculpture, and assemblage. Masha is noted for her vibrant colors and her hyper-realistic depictions of animals while Veronika focuses on geometric shapes in bold colors. Their work often features animals portrayed in illogical geometrics that are reminiscent of Picasso’s cubist art. The twins have won numerous awards including being named to both Russia’s Hall of Fame for Artists and the National Gallery Artist's Medal in Russia in 2007. In 2012 they were awarded the 2nd prize at the World Watercolor Biennale for their painting “Reflection”. In 2014 they were awarded the supreme prize of the National Watercolor Biennale, “Lavr. Nesterov”. Masha and Veronika are the daughters of a scientist father and a mother who was a translator. Their family is from Siberia, and since Siberia is home to many unique animals it influenced their artistic style. At first their parents tried to discourage them from becoming artists but later realized they had considerable talent and decided to support their studies in art after all. The Babko Twins live part-time in Leningrad. They come from a family that is very close-knit and they respect each other's opinion. When their mother passed away, they decided to dedicate her life to their art. They both came to the same conclusion that it was their bounden duty to make her proud of them. Masha and Veronika bury themselves in their work, getting up at two o’clock in the morning to paint. When invited out for dinner, they politely decline; instead they suggest you should spend time with your family or go for a walk outside where nature will inspire your imagination. Veronika is an artist who lives, eats, breathes and sleeps art. She is completely obsessed with it. After graduating from the Surikov Art Institute in 1990 she worked in advertising for seven years before she went back to art school at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts. She has gotten “totally stuck on” her art style. Her friends have gotten used to her being absent-minded everyday around 5pm when she turns the TV off and starts to scribble on paper. She says that she has gotten accustomed to dreaming in colors, finally letting go of the black and white world that other artists live in. The siblings live together in a small apartment in St. Petersburg and travel to exhibitions throughout the year. Masha and Veronika share a love of animals and that is reflected in their work and especially in their watercolors of animals which seem to be painted from life. 1882 – Artists: Stanislav Golenishchev (1882-1954) - ©1987, JSC A Connexion de la Fondation Monet (Paris) as per website: http://www.fondation-monet. cfa1e77820
